How to Receive Your Daily Portion from God

God provides a satisfying infilling for us when we spend time with Him. Here’s how to receive your daily portion from God and identify the enemy’s tactics to keep it from happening.

God pours out His love for us daily. We will encounter that love when we spend time with Him. We will thrive—grow well or vigorously—via the daily portion He provides for us. I love thriving because it means I’m growing closer to Jesus. There’s no greater satisfaction.

I cry to you, O LORD; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.” Psalm 142:5 ESV

What Is My Takeaway from My Daily Portion?

I have a passion to grow in God but some days I feel stuck. I hate being stuck. To avoid this I try to ask myself a few questions so my Daily Time with God doesn’t turn into a ritual.

  • What did I learn during this time?
  • What is God saying to me today?
  • Is there anything He is leading me to repent of or change?

I look for my “takeaway.” I’m not talking about simply learning some neat information to say, “That’s nice,” but a richness that impacted me.

Sometimes a takeaway is a truth that goes deep into my spirit. Other times it’s His leading to act on a specific command or to humble myself in repentance. And at times it’s when the Father orchestrated just the precise ingredients to produce a refreshing serving of encouragement.

  • What did I take away today that made me take pause?
  • Which facets of God’s character or design blew my mind?
  • What brought the same satisfaction of finishing up a hearty meal?

The LORD is my portion; I promise to keep your words. Psalm 119:57 ESV

What Happens When I Don’t Receive a Consistent Daily Portion?

When too many days go by that I don’t look for my daily bread, I start to feel weak. I start to forget His promises and the power He’s given me. The relationship seems distant, unreal. An emptiness sets in, even a type of complacency, and I’m left feeling frustrated with life.

Then upon reflection I discover that for hours—sometimes days—the wrong thoughts have been revolving around in my brain. The thoughts are not the victory-type thoughts that reflect His promises. Spiritual starvation has set in.

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26 ESV

God provides a satisfying infilling for us when we spend time with Him. Here’s how to receive your daily portion from God.

How Does the Enemy Try to Distance Me from God?

The Father of Lies will tell me any lie or half-truth to attempt to keep me out of reading and studying the Word:

  • God’s not real
  • I’ve sinned too much
  • God is mad at me

God exists. I know that. Yet what I can see before me are difficult circumstances.

The devil doesn’t try to make me question God’s existence. Instead he tries to feed me the lie that God isn’t good using hard times as false evidence. If I’m duped by his tactic, I will become suspicious of God. As a result, I will distance myself from Him and become ineffective in His kingdom.

The devil doesn’t want me to experience my special daily portion. He’s probably jealous of the unfailing love I receive from Father God!

How Do I Get Back to Receiving a Consistent Daily Portion from God?

When I feel that distance between me and God I try to remember that it’s not because God left me but because I “left” Him.

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39 ESV

Because I know the above truth, the Holy Spirit will remind me of it. Then I feel the need for an awakening because even life itself feels dull.

And I remember…there were times―days―that I felt the opposite. Why?

It was because I was intentional about going through each day searching until I experienced the special daily portion that He had reserved especially for me.

The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases;

his mercies never come to an end;

they are new every morning;

great is your faithfulness.

The LORD is my portion, says my soul,

therefore I will hope in him.

The LORD is good to those who wait for him,

to the soul who seeks him. Lamentations 3:22-25 ESV

Today I encourage you to take charge of your spiritual journey. Receive the wonderful daily portion God provides for you every day and you will thrive in Christ.

I’m looking for my portion today. How about you?

  1. Love how those words God spoke to me in the past have the power to remind me of His presence and His goodness in my today. Thank you for this encouragement to write down those things He speaks to our hearts.

  2. Hi Kelly

    Yes, He sure pours out His love for us daily.

    You’re right; with too many days with ‘the word’ we feel weak.

    By the way, you have some great images in this blog post.

  3. Hi Kelly! I love your realness with a relationship with God. It is a spiritual discipline, for sure, to make time daily to spend reading His word and praying. There are dry seasons, and it’s a good thing to remind ourselves that God is real, even when we can’t always sense His presence. That is why I love apologetics! Lots of folks get an impression that apologetics is simply trying to “argue someone into the faith.” But that is not at the heart of the study of apologetics. First, it’s theology. It’s knowing the reasons for why you believe Christianity to be true. When you know those reasons, then when the lies of the Enemy come at you in your thought life, telling you God isn’t real, you can remind yourself of all the reasons you know He is real. From the historical evidences of the Resurrection Event, to the basic understanding that God is the Creator of the universe, apologetics helps me to remain steadfast in my faith during seasons when God can be silent. God bless you!

      That’s wonderful, Lisa! I never really thought of apologetics that way before.
