Privacy Policy
Privacy Policy: The Short Version
I keep your information private and use several security measures to keep your information safe. I don’t share, sell, or trade your personally identifiable information. And I’ll keep doing my best to comply with laws to keep it that way.
Privacy Policy: The Long Version
Privacy Statement
This privacy policy has been compiled to better serve those who are concerned with how their ‘Personally Identifiable Information’ (PII) is being used online. PII, as described in US privacy law and information security, is information that can be used on its own or with other information to identify, contact, or locate a single person, or to identify an individual in context. Please read our privacy policy carefully to get a clear understanding of how we collect, use, protect or otherwise handle your Personally Identifiable Information in accordance with https://kellyrbaker.com. I care about my readers, and therefore your privacy is important to me and my assistants. We strictly comply with this privacy policy. Learn of any Privacy Policy changes by noting the “last updated” message at the bottom of the policy.
Personal identification information
When a reader chooses to subscribe to the newsletter, we will manually collect your first name and email address, and automatically collect the date, the time, and the IP address used to submit them. This personally identifiable information can only be collected by us if the reader voluntarily provides it. A reader may refuse to give such personal identification information by not filling out the subscribe form, but it will prevent the reader from being added to the email list.
After a reader subscribes to the newsletter, I use either Mailerlite or Mailchimp to store this information. For example, Mailchimp transfers this personal data into my Mailchimp account, and I use their services to send emails to our email distribution list. MailChimp has self-certified to both the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield and Swiss-U.S. Privacy Shield regimes, and lawfully transfers EU/EEA personal data to the U.S. pursuant to their Privacy Shield Certification. View their GDPR compliant terms of use and privacy policy here. Under the GDPR, EU subscribers have the right to be forgotten, the right to object, the right to rectification, the right of access, and the right of portability, in which case we comply as requested. I have signed their Data Processing Agreement as of May 16, 2018. View MailerLite’s privacy policy and terms of service.
Cookies
Cookies are small text files that can be used by websites to make a user’s experience more efficient.
The law states that we can store cookies on your device if they are strictly necessary for the operation of this site. For all other types of cookies we need your permission.
This site uses different types of cookies. Some cookies are placed by third party services that appear on our pages.
You can at any time change or withdraw your consent from the Cookie Declaration on our website. Please state your consent ID and date when you contact us regarding your consent.
Google Forms and Surveys
This site sometimes uses Google forms to conduct voluntary surveys or collect information for the purpose of getting a greater scope of our readers’ needs. Google stores the data behind a secure wall for the duration of the need.
Contact and Comment Forms
A reader may choose to submit their information via a contact or comment form on this site. By using these forms, the reader agrees to the storage and handling of the data voluntarily submitted by this website. We keep contact form submissions for as long as needed for customer service purposes. If you submit information in the guest post submission form, the information will be processed as described in the agreement found on the guest post here page.
When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue. I keep contact form entries for six months unless the information is needed in an ongoing manner and analytics records for 26 months.
I hold the right to use any comment left on the site by a visitor for display or advertising in any manner I choose, whether on the site, in blog posts, in newsletter emails, or any other marketing communication.
Letters to the Editor
Any message that is sent to me via email, snail mail, social media messaging systems, or the site’s contact form is strictly confidential, and will not be used in any way without the written consent of the sender.
Third-party disclosure
We do not share, sell, trade, or otherwise transfer to outside parties your Personally Identifiable Information unless we provide users with advance notice. This does not include website hosting partners and other parties who assist us in operating our website, conducting our business, or serving our users, so long as those parties agree to keep this information confidential. We may also release information when it’s release is appropriate to comply with the law, enforce our site policies, or protect ours or others’ rights, property or safety.
However, non-personally identifiable visitor information may not be provided to other parties for marketing, advertising, or other uses. We don’t spam our readers.
Third-party links
Occasionally, at our discretion, we may include or offer third-party products or services on our website. These third-party sites have separate and independent privacy policies. We therefore have no responsibility or liability for the content and activities of these linked sites. Nonetheless, we seek to protect the integrity of our site and welcome any feedback about these sites.

We may use the information we collect from you when you sign up for our newsletter, respond to a survey or marketing communication, surf the website, fill out a form, or use certain other site features in the following ways:
- To personalize your experience and to allow us to deliver the type of content and product offerings in which you are most interested.
- To improve our website and products in order to better serve you.
- To allow us to better service you in responding to your customer service requests.
- To administer a contest, promotion, survey or other site feature.
- To send periodic emails of recent blog posts, or other pertinent information relating to this site.
What rights you have over your data
If you have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
How do we protect your information?
Your personal information is contained behind secured networks and is only accessible by a limited number of persons who have special access rights to such systems, and are required to keep the information confidential after completing our staff training in data protection. We also use regular brute force attack protection.
California Online Privacy Protection Act
CalOPPA is the first state law in the nation to require commercial websites and online services to post a privacy policy. The law’s reach stretches well beyond California to require any person or company in the United States (and conceivably the world) that operates websites collecting Personally Identifiable Information from California consumers to post a conspicuous privacy policy on its website stating exactly the information being collected and those individuals or companies with whom it is being shared.
According to CalOPPA, we agree to the following:
- Users can visit our site anonymously.
- Once this privacy policy is created, we will add a link to it on our home page or as a minimum, on the first significant page after entering our website.
- Our Privacy Policy link includes the word ‘Privacy’ and can easily be found on the page specified above.
COPPA (Children Online Privacy Protection Act)
When it comes to the collection of personal information from children under the age of 13 years old, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) puts parents in control. The Federal Trade Commission, United States’ consumer protection agency, enforces the COPPA Rule, which spells out what operators of websites and online services must do to protect children’s privacy and safety online.
We do not specifically market to children under the age of 13 years old.
Fair Information Practices
The Fair Information Practices Principles form the backbone of privacy law in the United States and the concepts they include have played a significant role in the development of data protection laws around the globe. Understanding the Fair Information Practice Principles and how they should be implemented is critical to comply with the various privacy laws that protect personal information.
In order to be in line with Fair Information Practices we will take the following responsive action, should a data breach occur:
- We will notify KRB Insiders via email within 1-2 business days
- We will notify the users via in-site notification within 1-2 business days
We also agree to the Individual Redress Principle which requires that individuals have the right to legally pursue enforceable rights against data collectors and processors who fail to adhere to the law. This principle requires not only that individuals have enforceable rights against data users, but also that individuals have recourse to courts or government agencies to investigate and/or prosecute non-compliance by data processors.
CAN SPAM Act
The CAN-SPAM Act is a law that sets the rules for commercial email, establishes requirements for commercial messages, gives recipients the right to have emails stopped from being sent to them, and spells out tough penalties for violations.
We collect your email address in order to:
- Send information, respond to inquiries, and/or other requests or questions
To be in accordance with CANSPAM, we agree to the following:
- Not use false or misleading subjects or email addresses.
- Identify the message as an advertisement in some reasonable way.
- Include the physical address of our business or site headquarters.
- Monitor third-party email marketing services for compliance, if one is used.
- Honor opt-out/unsubscribe requests quickly.
- Allow users to unsubscribe by using the link at the bottom of each email.
If at any time you would like to unsubscribe from receiving future emails:
- Follow the instructions at the bottom of each email and we will promptly remove you from ALL correspondence.
