Bad Day? This Is How God Is Working Through It

Are you going through a tough season? Then you and a diamond just might have something in common. Here’s how God is working on you through it all.

I rested my hands where my hairline began and cradled the weight of my head for a moment in weary repose. Those around me went about their business, oblivious to my pause for pleading that the earth would stop spinning on its axis for a while. I needed a break.

I was trying to keep my poise but felt it slipping like a dropped coin rolling toward a storm drain. My fingers pressed into my forehead, a subconscious response to the pressure life had thrown my way. I’m not a rubber band, God! I whispered through hot tears.

Just as faithfully as numerous times before, when I acknowledge God in trying moments, He answers with what I need to know.

I am working on you.

I let my fingers smooth down my arched brow. Stop making wrinkles, I chided myself. I realized I needed to “let go and let God,” as the saying goes. The truth is, my wise Creator was forming me into something beautiful.

Is This Season of Your Life Messy and Full of Pressure?

Do you ever have a season like that, when you feel like you can’t take it anymore? Like you can’t bear one more day or you will explode? Like God has turned a blind eye to your long season full of so much stress and pressure?

The truth is, God is never blind to these types of strains. Actually, the beginning of this day wasn’t the starting point of God’s work on you. For a long time, He’s been using the intense trials of your life to make you into a diamond; You are greatly prized by your heavenly Father.

You might be saying, “I do NOT look like a diamond, much less any precious gem! Have you seen my messy life recently?”

I get it. Wearisome seasons where you feel like a rubber band stretched past its point of endurance? It doesn’t seem pretty. But God gets it too. And it’s fodder for His fingers.

5 Verses That Show God Is Working on You

God takes great pleasure in the transforming work of His people. He shapes you more into His image as you grow in Him. As you come into greater spiritual maturity, He is able to give you more responsibility in His Kingdom.

Here are five verses that show God is working on you. Notice the good in it where I placed emphasis:

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good workin you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6 ESV

For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Philippians 2:13 ESV

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28 NASB

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10 ESV

Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work. 2 Timothy 2:21 NASB

See Joseph’s story for an example:

As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. Genesis 50:20 ESV

4 Ways the Forming of a Diamond Relates to God Working on You

An enormous amount of factors have to meet together to produce a diamond. The study of how this precious gemstone comes about makes a fascinating analogy for our lives. I think it demonstrates how God is working on us.

Conditions

Extreme. Does that word sound like it could describe your life right now? Diamonds are formed under extreme conditions of extreme temperature and pressure. You might be able to relate if you are under a massive amount of pressure. Or if your days hold unbelievable and undesirable circumstances. This just means your life is ripe for God to make you into a diamond.

Placement

The rare crystals form so deep in the upper mantle of the earth that no way exists to drill to that depth. Do you ever think people just “don’t understand”? Others won’t comprehend what it’s like when we are enduring such a season. That’s because only your Creator knows precisely how deep He’s working in your soul.

Rupture

So if no way exists to reach the depths where these remarkable jewels form, how are they within reach? They’re brought to the surface by deep volcanic eruptions. I can relate to that. In my humanness, I “erupt,” when the extreme strain is unbearable. My heart crumbles under the weight of the pressure, and I “burst” into emotional tears or with an unintelligible guttural cry. You know what I mean? We get “so done” with it all, and all we can do is run to the Father.

Value

Have you ever heard the saying, “We all want to be diamonds, but few want to be cut”? If not, you might know this one: “No two diamonds are the same.” Diamonds exist in various sizes, colors, and shapes, and are truly unique. Just like a woman loves to wear her diamonds, God loves to put His diamonds on display. Get ready to be put on display, friend!

Beautiful Yielding to God Becomes Priceless

All these components meet together in the natural to form a diamond. In the same way, God is working on you. He will take every single messy detail and each pressure-filled element of your life to produce an eye-stopping diamond out of you. It’s for His purposes (Romans 8:28).

When I have reflected on past seasons that fit this criterion, I can see how He did a deep work in me each time. And I needed them for my future.

So if you’re there right now, thrive through these trials and yield to His shaping. God is faithful. He will complete the work He has started in you because you are His treasure.

How pleasing to envision how God views each one of us as His exquisite creation!

How is God working on you? Do you think He’s making you into a diamond from the pressures of life?

Yes, the diamond analogy fits my current season..

Knowing my life is ripe for God to do His work, knowing He is doing a deep work in my soul, knowing running to Him is the best path to take, and knowing this season has value enables me to yield to His shaping.

Thank You for reminding me of all the GOOD found in His Word today!!!

This is so true and so hard to see in the moment. It feels harder to bare sometimes than anything else. I really hate those moments where the world stops for me and I can see everyone else still going about their lives. You’re right though, I look back and realize that was God refining me.

  3. Thank you for these words of encouragement. I just love how God’s words are so full of life! I’m encouraged reading from you. Thank you.

  4. Hi, Kelly!
This is so good, and I’ve come looking for your words today, realizing that it’s been a while since I heard from you.
Trusting that all is well–summer seems to be a time for larger orbits and less connection for me as well.
