10 Must-Have Items for a Satisfying Daily Time with God
Having these 10 items for Daily Time with God makes it more satisfying. Seeking God daily is the foundation to thriving in Christ.

If there’s anything in this life that makes me feel grounded, it’s having a Daily Time with God. It’s my mantra: Determining Again I Live Yielded. Today I’m Maintaining Evidence. Seeking God daily is the foundation to thriving in Christ in every area. What makes it more satisfying are these 10 must-have items for Daily Time with God!
My 10 Favorite Items for Daily Time with God
Mug
I’m a coffee and tea drinker. They’re like comfort food. So I have a variety of mugs that I use to drink my tea each day, but one favorite is my “I write. What’s your superpower?” mug. I’m thankful my son got this for my birthday because he understands that I wear an invisible cape. Mmmhmm he knows, y’all! Inspirational ones are great, too.
Electric kettle
If I’m having my Daily Time with God in my bedroom or on a trip, I use an electric kettle for convenience. This sleek Presto one gets the job done, but I have my eye on this epic stainless steel one. (Ahem, dear husband. Christmas is coming soon, and you could also use it to heat it to your perfect coffee temperature. Win-win.)
Mug Warmer
If your coffee or tea gets cold before you’re done drinking it, you will agree that this mug warmer is the Best. Invention. Ever. My husband got me one for my birthday. But then everyone else wanted to use it all the time, so now we have three. And they get used a lot! (Here’s an even cheaper one.)
Bible
This is really the only must-have on the list, but we like our perks. Am I a heathen for not making it number one? Umm…don’t answer that. So, BIBLE. Yes, Bible. 😉 This NASB version with a pink cover is also on my list because I don’t have a physical copy in this version yet. It’s my go-to right now, unless I’m using the amazing THRIVE: A Journaling Devotional Bible for Women I received as a gift. It has a 365-day reading plan and devotionals built right in! Their description:
Though it doesn’t include every chapter and verse, it offers a complete view of Scripture and does so without being overwhelming. By skipping material that appears more than once, it gives you a streamlined look at the entire Bible.
Colors
And of course a good Bible needs some Twistables crayons to illuminate verses that speak to me. They don’t bleed like highlighters do, and there are multiple colors to let my inner artist out! I love the no mess, no need to sharpen or peel labels, and what’s more is they last so long. They also have a fun effects Twistables, which are metallic.
Bible study or devotional
I tend to go through a Bible study on weekdays. For many years I have been using studies by HelloMornings (I’m a contributing author to four so far: Hosea, New Beginnings, Greatly to Be Praised, and our Esther study releases early 2019.). Other favorites are from Priscilla Shirer, like her Gideon study. My friend Nicole from Courage. Hope. Love. just released her study Find Your Calling (affiliate link) that’s phenomenal as well.
Devotional
On the weekends, in-between studies, or extremely busy seasons, I use a devotional. I just finished Awaken by Priscilla Shirer, and wish she had a sequel already.
Journal
There’s a relationship going on between God and me. He remembers every detail, but I forget so much when I don’t write down what He’s teaching me. A designated journal notebook is the perfect place to chronicle my spiritual history. Inspirational spirals are my favorite, and bonus if it has a pouch or strap.
Prayer Book
Sometimes it’s less taxing on my brain when someone else has done the hard work of putting thoughts into words for me to pray. I am super blessed to have come across Praying for Your Husband from Head to Toe by Sharon Jaynes! My copy of this 30-day prayer guide looks well-worn because it’s a favorite. And also because my toddler spilled water on it. 😉 From the back cover:
…Sharon Jaynes maps out sixteen landmarks to help you consistently and effectively cover your husband in prayer. From his mind and the thoughts he thinks, to his eyes and the images he sees, all the way down to his feet and the path he takes, Sharon teaches you how to pray for your husband in ways that are powerful, practical, and life-changing.
They only take 5-7 minutes a day! What an investment!

Music
Worship music is an enormous blessing! When David played for Saul (1 Samuel 16:13, 23) three things happened:
- Refreshing. Saul was refreshed, which means revive there.
- Healing. Saul received healing, and he wasn’t necessarily seeking it.
- Peace. The evil spirit departed from Saul.
I don’t know about you, but I could use some refreshing, healing, and peace in my life! And there’s nothing like the sweet presence of God near.

I have to have my mug of coffee, or should I say an air pumper filled with Coffee. My gel highlighters, my twistable crayons, my personal journal, my prayer journal (as they are two different journals). My Bible and a devotion book. I also have several Bible Studies that I do too. I love reading God’s Word and I am learning so much that I didn’t quite understand before. But before I get started with all this journaling and Bible Study, I set aside time for prayer and listening to God before I begin. I found out His Word seems to come alive if I take the time to pray first. There a lot of days I don’t have the time to spend in lengthy prayer and I just ask God to open my mind and my heart to understand what I will be reading from His word today and how I can find any promises or life applicable lessons for me to put into practice. I have raised my child and my grandchildren are older so I don’t have children to worry about and I can usually make time to start my day with prayer and studying God’s Word. Some days I can’t because I have appointments early on and those days don’t seem to go as well for me. But I try to worship God on the way to my appointments and say silent prayers while waiting for my appointments to begin. I have so many journals filled already and I am just starting one that I am entitled “Praise with God” and I am started to take each letter of the alphabet and list some characteristics of God under each alphabet. I dress it up by different colors, sizes of the Alphabets and sometimes I include a picture of the letter that I have taken that starts with the letter I am working on. This has made me appreciate God even more when I take the time to list all his characteristics. I have to admit, this was not my idea. I had read about it several years ago on one of the websites I stumbled across and didn’t think much about it then. But this last year I remembered it and so I began a new journal with this format. I drew pictures in it, made it look festive I have now finished that part of it and I am not writing out all the scriptures I can find that pertain to praises, praising God. If I have enough room left after this, then I am thinking of putting in song lyrics that I can sing to praise and worship God with. haven’t made up my mind about that one yet.
Thanks so much for sharing, Betty! When your journal is done it is going to be such a rich keepsake! I love how you are intentionally digging into the characteristics of God. That’s always a great idea. 🙂
Great list, Kelly!
Thanks, friend!
Great list! I always have a mug of something hot too. The twistable crayons sound like a game changer! I need to go get some. Highlighter was frustrating and pen just doesn’t have the same effect.
Let me know if you get some and how it goes! They’re awesome!
And someone to watch the kids.
LOL
My favorite insulated mug filled with coffee and my cat on my lap in my comfy recliner is the set up for my God time. A study Bible, devotional, journal – must have nice quality paper – and a mechanical pencil. It depends on which Bible I use whether I use gel pens or pencil in it. I will check out the twist pens you mentioned. They sound great. I use color in my journals more so than in my Bible.
I use mechanical pencils, too! So I think you will really like the Twistables.
