From the 40 Days of Daily Bread Series.
The devil probably doesn’t like it that you have determined to have 40 days with God. We know he isn’t just going to sit on his dirty bum and watch you without a fight. If you aren’t putting on your Armor every day, then you are going to get wounded pretty quickly. The first part of the passage below emphasizes to “stand” four times. The wounded aren’t standing. They’re laying down or dying.
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints. Ephesians 6:10-18 NKJV
You have four elements coming at you to knock you down. You need to stand against the devil, your flesh, the influence of culture, and just the busyness of everyday life. The Armor of God will enable you to be equipped so that you can stand against all these things and come out victorious.
Those in the midst of a physical war have been known to sleep with their armor on and have their weapons right beside them. In the natural you get dressed when you get up for the day. When you wake up you probably already know that you are about to walk into a battle between the forces of good and evil. You are caught in the crossfire whether you want to be or not. It doesn’t take much to be ready, though. God has provided spiritual armor for us and has commanded us to put it on. Just as you get dressed in the morning in the natural, the Armor of God is part of our spiritual wardrobe. Being dressed right is a first step in being prepared to fight.
Apply the Word
This section is to help us respond to His promptings. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. James 1:22
- Put On Your Armor
Commit each piece to memory. It’s easier to remember the whole set if you think of each piece in order on the body from top to toe:
- Helmet of Salvation
- Breastplate of Righteousness
- Girdle (Belt) of Truth
- Shoes of Peace
- Shield of Faith
- Sword of the Spirit
Ask God to clearly show you the strategies of the enemy against you. Ask Him to show you where you need to stand. Write these things in your journal.
Question: How are you going to stand?
There are four elements trying to knock you down. Here’s how to stand. [Tweet this]
Our Daily Bread for the next few days will be looking at each individual piece in helping you to use it to it’s fullness. [See Days 3 – 10] Tomorrow we will see how the Helmet protects the thoughts, eyes, ears and mouth.Photo credit: Amber Karnes (Creative Commons)
