Day 2: Stand Strong

It’s time to stand strong. You have four elements coming at you to knock you down. You need to stand strong against them using the armor of God. From the 40 Days of Daily Bread Series.

It’s time to stand strong.

The devil probably doesn’t like it that you have determined to have 40 days with God. We know he isn’t just going to sit on his dirty bum and watch you without a fight.

If you aren’t putting on your Armor every day, then you are going to get wounded pretty quickly. The first part of the passage below emphasizes to “stand” four times.

The wounded aren’t standing. They’re laying down or dying.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.

In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, Ephesians 6:10-18 ESV

What You Need to Stand Strong Against

You have four elements coming at you to knock you down. You need to stand strong against:

  • the devil
  • your flesh
  • influence of culture
  • the busyness of everyday life

The Armor of God will enable you to be equipped so that you can stand against all these things and come out victorious.

Those in the midst of a physical war have been known to sleep with their armor on and have their weapons right beside them. In the natural you get dressed when you get up for the day. When you wake up you probably already know that you are about to walk into a battle between the forces of good and evil. You are caught in the crossfire whether you want to be or not.

It doesn’t take much to be ready, though. God already provided spiritual armor for us and has commanded us to put it on. Just as you get dressed in the morning in the natural, the Armor of God is part of our spiritual wardrobe. Being dressed right is a first step in being prepared to fight.

And in case you’re wondering, “What if I didn’t take off my armor?” Putting it on is using it, and the simple act of praying it through is a practical reminder to put your armor to good use. It will help you stand strong.

Apply the Word

This section is to help us respond to the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” James 1:22 ESV

  • Put On Your Armor

Commit each piece to memory. It’s easier to remember the whole set if you think of each piece in order on the body from top to toe:

  1. Helmet of Salvation
  2. Breastplate of Righteousness
  3. Girdle (Belt) of Truth
  4. Shoes of Peace
  5. Shield of Faith
  6. Sword of the Spirit
  • Pray

Ask God to clearly show you the strategies of the enemy against you. Ask Him to show you where you need to stand strong. Write these things in your journal.

  1. It’s only Day 2 and I am already so blessed by this study. Just last week I had written a blog post about Spiritual Warfare and taking up our weapons. Today’s devotion just added so much practical meat to what the Lord had laid on my heart.

I loved when you stated, “You have four elements coming at you to knock you down. You need to stand against the devil, your flesh, the influence of culture, and just the busyness of everyday life. The Armor of God will enable you to be equipped so that you can stand against all these things and come out victorious.” So very, very true.

    Thank you again for sharing!

    1. Awesome! I like to see how the Word can be applied practically. I’m seeing you as a warrior. 🙂
