Meet Lesley Crawford

Please start by telling us a little about yourself.

I live in Scotland and work for a Christian charity with children and young people.  In my spare time I enjoy playing music (I play clarinet in a band and also play piano), watching musicals, and walking- especially in beautiful places where I can enjoy God’s creation.

List approximately three favorites.

My favourite film is The Sound Of Music, my favourite colour is purple, and my favourite season is Spring.

List one unique fact about you.

I have a mind like a jukebox!  I often find I have a song in my head and I have no idea why, but when I think back I usually realise that someone has said a line from a song or mentioned something associated with it.  I haven’t consciously made the link, but somehow the tune is in my head!

Tell us about your blog/ministry?

My blog is called “Life In The Spacious Place” and I’ve been writing there for just over three years.  The name comes from Psalm 18:19 and it is about exploring the freedom we have in Christ. My tagline is “Speaking truth, sharing hope” and I write to encourage people with biblical truth and point them to the hope we have in Jesus, whatever circumstances we face.

He brought me out to a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me. Psalm 18:19 CSB

What do you feel God leading you to do next?

I was recently asked to write some blog posts for Journey to Heal Ministries, which supports women who have experienced sexual abuse and points them to hope in Christ.  It’s a cause that is close to my heart and I’m excited by the opportunity to share hope with women in that situation.

Lesley Crawford’s Spiritual Growth

What Bible character has influenced your life the most?

The story of Joseph (from Genesis) is the first Bible story I remember hearing as a child and it is the first story I read in the Bible for myself.  It encouraged me a lot to know that God was with Joseph, even as he went through difficult times, and that God had a plan for him, and worked even sin and suffering into that plan for good.

Have you ever gone deep in your walk with God? How did He minister to you?

In my early-mid 20s I spent a lot of time seeking God as I worked through some difficult memories.  I learned to be honest with God and to wrestle with the questions I had, and I discovered that I could talk to God about things I couldn’t share with anyone else.

During that time, I also felt that God was leading me to step out to serve him in youth ministry.  It was a task that I felt ill-equipped for, but I learned to depend on God and that he could work through me, even in my weakness.

Those few years really strengthened my faith.  I properly grasped God’s love for the first time and grew to trust him more, and eventually that gave me the confidence to be more open with others.

How do you keep your Daily Time with God regular?

I try to make it a priority to have time with God first thing in the morning as it prepares me for the day.  For the last few years I have been using the reading plans at She Reads Truth, which generally work through a book of the Bible looking at a chapter or two each day.  I’ve found that approach works well for me and the commentaries on the site provide helpful insights and applications.

How do you think we best need to respond to criticism?

Personally, I need to take a step back and take some time to process it.  My first reaction is usually an emotional one, which is not always helpful, but if I take some time to pray about it and consider it I can respond in a more balanced way.  It’s always important to remember that criticism is just someone else’s opinion and it may or may not be valid, so I think taking the time to pray and seek God’s perspective is helpful.

It’s so good to know more about you, Lesley! My husband is the exact same way about the songs. When someone says a phrase, he’s usually breaking into a song that’s related. So another walking jukebox. Too funny. I’ll be praying for you during this exciting new chapter. Blessings!
