Have you ever memorized large portions of scripture? It takes your daily time with God to a whole new level. I hadn’t tried memorizing chapters since I was a girl, especially since my brain gets foggy sometimes from hypothyroidism. Recently though, I have been encouraged by my friends over at donotdepart.com because part of the focus is memorizing large chunks of scripture. About a month ago I decided to memorize the first 3 chapters of Proverbs, and I’m nearly done with having the first chapter down. Some are memorizing whole books of the Bible and have linked up with the Hide His Word Link-up.
Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You. Psalm 119:11 NKJV
Heart of God
At about 3 weeks in I was reciting the first 22 verses of chapter 1 during my time with the Lord. Then I moved to the next couple of verses, repeating them aloud to begin learning them. All of a sudden I was overcome with a burden for those who continually choose to reject wisdom. It says:
Turn at my rebuke; surely I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you. Because I have called and you refused, I have stretched out my hand and no one regarded. Proverbs 1:22-23 NKJV
I was surprised to be suddenly feeling so moved for those who continually choose to reject wisdom, because in essence they are rejecting the Lord. I have been completely taken back that the words became God’s heart speaking and it was like I could feel His anguish. I felt his grief and started crying and praying for lost souls.
Memorizing Comes in Practical Ways
I have used specific targeted scriptures to get free of sin. While I’m working on that, the verses just naturally become memorized.
Praying scriptures aloud will help you learn them. Jesus talked to Satan by saying, “It is written…” and so can you. (e.g. It is written in Isaiah 53:5, with His stripes we are healed.)
I’ve also experienced that it helps you have something else to think about when your mind starts going in the wrong direction.
