5 Ways to Learn God’s Voice

[This is part of the Hearing God’s Voice series.]

talking to GodRealize that God wants you to know His voice.

We don’t need to strive for His favor, because He is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34). He has called us His friends (John 15:15). God doesn’t need anything. He’s God. Yet He wanted to create you. To love you. To talk to you. To pour into you. Did you know that He is waiting to talk to you? Many of us may be so busy that most days we forget that. But He is gentle. He has said come (John 7:37, Matthew 11:28).

Realize that the enemy of your soul wants you to listen to him instead of God.

Any time you are in a season of trying to learn the voice of the Lord the father of lies will come and tell you things about you that are not true (the opposite of what the Word says about you). Since God has given you authority over all the power of the enemy (Luke 10:19), remember to bind any lying spirit that is coming against you. Binding and loosing are keys of the kingdom (Matthew 16:19), so bind lying spirits and loose the Spirit of Truth in its place.

Pray the following verses over yourself and the declarations after them.

It will cause you to believe what is true. Faith comes by hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17).

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. John16:13 NKJV (The Spirit of Truth guides me into all truth.)

To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” John 10:3-5 NKJV (I hear, know and follow the voice of the Lord; I flee from the voice of the stranger.)

devil's poolDon’t get flaky.

I often pray that I will never be deceived and I pray this over my children, too. We are the friend of God, and the word friend implies a certain degree of intimacy. Yet, any truth taken into extremes can be made into an error. Intimacy with God is certainly a good thing, but if we pridefully forget our place we may be headed down a dangerous slope. We may start hearing a voice that we think is God, but is actually the deceiver (2 Corinthians 11:14). We have sadly seen people be so deceived that they believe God has shown them a private interpretation (2 Peter 1:20). Those people eventually turn away from God or to other religions, or continue to believe they are walking in the Light while teaching false doctrine.

Remember that God will never go against His word, or change the meaning of scripture to agree with a voice you heard.

Once a woman told us that God said for her to divorce her husband and marry another man. She was being led away by a spirit of adultery, even though the other man hadn’t touched her. Unfortunately, she did not heed the counsel and obeyed the wrong voice.

  2. Very good instructions for us all to follow. I have also found the more I obey what He has told me to do the more familiar I become with His voice.
