Be Creative

What do you do when you are out of time, out of resources and you feel stuck? You choose to be creative.

We had a family birthday celebration yesterday and I realized I forgot to get my brother his birthday card. We were running late and all I had was the generic birthday cards in a box. Since his present was a check, a card was necessary. I decided to try to make the best of the situation and I figured I could be creative and either make him laugh, cry or say, “Aww, that was sweet.” I decided to make him laugh. I picked a joke from Let’s Laugh by C. Peter Wagner and used it to my advantage. Below is what I wrote in his card:

You know how it is with birthday cards. You begin to scope out the envelope as you try not to look greedy when the giver hands it to you. And then your heart sinks as you pull out a generic box card, “There’s no way I’m gonna get something good from this.” So to ease your disappointment, we decided to give you some words of wisdom for your special day:

There was this wonderful missionary couple in their 60s. They were so faithful to God, they served and sacrificed so much to the Lord, that God decided to reward them here on earth as well as later on in Heaven.

So God sent an angel who told them what a good job they had done, and as a reward God had given the angel authority to grant them any desire of their heart. Anything! The angel encouraged them to think carefully and without reservation.

So the wife said, “Sir, I’ve always wanted to go on an Alaskan cruise!” And “poof” they were on a cruise.

Then the angel said to the husband, “Now what is your wish?” the husband took the angel over to one side and said quietly, “You know, sir, I’ve always wanted a wife thirty years younger than me.”

And “poof!” He was 90 years old!

So, dear TJ, I hope you have learned from this story. We wanted to make sure you did not become greedy and wish for anything at all even if it is your birthday. So as you can see there is nothing on the inside of this card.

After I signed our names on the bottom, I strategically taped his folded check on the back where his fingers wouldn’t touch it and accidentally spoil the surprise. We all had a good laugh and something mediocre turned out interesting, fun and entertaining for everyone.

There might be something in your life that is a nagging frustration. Don’t focus on what you can’t do. Focus on what you can do and be creative. Ask God to show you how you can use what you do have and change everything.
