Question after question filled my thoughts as I sat pondering the “trouble spots” during that season of my life:

  • I needed answers on how to deal with my kids
  • God laid it on my heart to start a business, but I didn’t know the first step
  • I had theology questions

I needed to find wisdom for all of these areas, and it had to be from a reliable source.

Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding. Proverbs 3:13 ESV

We find wisdom through God. He’s the One who will pour it out liberally to us if we only ask (James 1:5). Verse 13 says we are blessed when we find wisdom, and specific blessings are described among its characteristics in verses 14-17. In verse 18, we learn that those who “hold her fast” are blessed.

She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called blessed. Proverbs 3:18 ESV

Verses 13 and 18 are like the bread that holds this “wisdom sandwich” together. Cheesy analogy, I know, but look at what holds all the goodness of the blessings together. Notice verse 13 says we find wisdom.

Scenario #1:

Imagine you’re taking a walk, and notice something sparkly lying on the ground. You found it, but don’t touch it. You get back home and tell your family you found something sparkly lying on the ground.

Truth of the matter: you saw something, but the sparkly discovery is still lying there waiting for someone to claim it.

Scenario #2:

Imagine you took that walk and noticed the sparkly something and picked it up. Then the wind blew it out of your hand.

Verse 18 says, “those who lay hold of her.” In other words, those who take hold of the wisdom God provides. The thing is, though, along the way, we tend to “drop” God’s wisdom as we’re walking through life. Problems come up, and we start trying to fix them on our own.

Scenario #3:

Imagine you take that walk and notice the sparkly treasure lying on the ground, pick it up, and hold on to it with a death grip.

Verse 18 also says, “those who hold her fast,” meaning those who clinch it tight and not let go.

The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens; Proverbs 3:19 ESV

God, founder of the earth, founded it by wisdom. Build your life on God’s wisdom; let it be the foundation by which you base your decisions.

3 Biblical Ways to Find Wisdom

Notice the portions of these verses that I bolded to discover some ways to get wisdom.

Hear instruction and be wise, and do not neglect it. Proverbs 8:33 ESV

When I needed answers on how to deal with my kids, I went to my mentors that had traveled the road before me. I listened to their advice.

For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:6 ESV (verses 1-11 are rich on this subject!)

When I wanted to know what the Bible had to say about something, I studied the Word to find out.

The beginning of wisdom is: Acquire wisdom; And with all your acquiring, get understanding. Proverbs 4:7 NASB

To learn how to start a business, I took a class. I acquired wisdom.

God gives us wonderful wisdom. If we dig into the Word, we will also find the blessings of it (Proverbs 3:13 (ESV). Here's how. #DailyTimeDevotional #ThrivingInChrist Click to Tweet
